The Journalist

journalistA pen, a notepad, a juicy new story
The building was old, only two-storey
I climbed up the stairs in disgust
The place was covered in dirt and dust
I looked down at the Senator’s black Jeep that I followed
What was a dignitary doing in a place like this, I swallowed
Then I heard two gunshots from the stairs above, followed by a piercing scream
What happened next was like a dream
I bundled up the stairs, with my camera thudding against my breast
To find the senator above a dead man, bullets pumped into his chest
I held up my camera and took five shots at least
The dignitary then turned savage, the politician, a beast
He lunged towards me like an angry bull, strong and mean
Red eyes beaming maliciously, sweat gleaming on thick black skin
Then everything turned black, I could only hear the melodious echo of an ambulance siren
Knowing I’ll live to see another day, I silently whispered, ‘I win’.

Love me like musicians do
Love me gently, love me like crazy
Make me smile, make me cry
Then sing me a song and wipe my tears dry

Love me like musicians do
Bruno Mars can jump in front of a train
And take a bullet to his brain
Would I be asking too much, if I told you to jump off a flying plane?

Love me like musicians do
Wrap me my favourite CD as a birthday present
Then rap my best rap song to me
Even if you stutter and stammer or stop half-way through
I’ll give you a round of applause and kiss you when you’re through

Love me like musicians do
Call me your Katy Perry
Cos I fulfill all your teenage dreams
Or Beyoncé
Cos I run your world
Either way, I’ll cherish you

Love me like musicians do
Promise me it’ll always be fun
While we are young and even when we grow old
Not just some nights, but every night

Love me like musicians do
Love me, just do it don’t think it through
As long as you love me, I’ll love you too
And you won’t just be my boyfriend, like Bieber, I might even say ‘I do’.

We live in a society where every one wants to be heard and everybody wants to be famous for one thing or the other.Where every one is either a famous musician, a popular actress or a super blogger. It gets frustrating when everyone else is under the spotlight and you’re there in the background feeling invincible. This post is about finding your voice and getting yourself heard in this society.

To get yourself heard, you have to learn how to speak your mind. I don’t mean for you to speak out every odd little thought that pops into your head, no. I’m talking about voicing your opinions and not letting anyone stamp down your ideas.Don’t be a pushover!A lot of people are used to following the band wagon, when everyone else’s opinions differ from ours we tend to just “go with the flow”. There’s this popular Yoruba adage, when translated it means:

When the world turns around, let’s also turn with them

This has become normal in society but we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be convinced that our opinions don’t count because they do.If anyone told me I shouldn’t watch cartoons cause it’s childish or immature….ooh, it’s going to be world war II all over again. Just try separating me from my Cartoon Network and you just signed your death-wish.

But all jokes apart, we should all be equally able to speak our minds even if it makes us different. You don’t have to sleep with your boss for a promotion just cause other girls are doing it, or let your girlfriend/boyfriend/partner impose their principles, ideas and opinions on you cause you’re scared they’ll leave you.Speak up!

In order to stand up for something, you have to stand out for that thing. Being different entails thinking like an achiever. In our present society everyone looks, dresses, and acts the same. We’ve all turned into social zombies, products of what society makes us out to be. Being different not only guarantees you being heard but also being remembered. A bright light will shine in darkness but no one will notice it in the daytime, stand out!

When I die, I want to be remembered for something, not just anything but something great. I don’t want to be this person that is forgotten a year after. From my youth, I’ve started carving a niche for myself, what’s stopping you? To be known for something, you don’t have to invent something new or try hard to achieve what has never been achieved before (although, that’s not bad either)instead think of ways to improve what we already have in existence. Percy Spencer invented microwave popcorn even though popcorn had been discovered thousands of years ago. He took something old, twisted it into something entirely different and made a name out of it.

Winners don’t do different things; they do things differently

Have you ever seen babies when they are hungry? They scream out loud and they don’t stop till their mothers pay attention to them and give them what they want. When you want something you have to be persistent and relentless because when you keep clamoring for something, you’ll get it eventually. Most successful people were not born great, some of them were write-offs, but they worked up to it.The few that were born to succeed worked hard to keep it because they recognize that continuity and persistence makes success. So what if you were born a great drummer, if you ignore your talent it will amount to nothing.

A lot of people have stood up for one thing or another at one point. But my all-time favorite hero who stood up for something is Daniel ( in the Bible). When no one in all of Babylon could read or interpret the strange writing on the wall to King Belshazzar, Daniel was brought to the King and he was promised all manner of riches and even the third ruling position in all the land if he could read and interpret it.But Daniel said boldly to the King:

Let your gifts be to yourself and give your rewards to another; yet I will
read the writing to the King and make known to him the interpretation

Daniel 5:17

I wonder how many people now can be blessed with such a gift without misusing it.Stand up for something but not just anything, rather than fight for a cause you know nothing about, pursue your passions and beliefs.

If it is to be, it is up to me.

Here’s a little something I composed for this valentine season, everyone is burning with love and even if you aren’t, it’s pretty much alright to just enjoy it….here goes:

Love like red hot magma, burning through my soul
Ever since I gave you my heart, my chest feels empty, I’m just a big gaping hole
My skin burns like a fever, yes it’s true
The sun won’t scorch, and fire won’t burn, I’m only hot for you
My whole world’s crumbling, I keep falling apart
You’re the volcano that erupted and consumed my heart
At your sight, my heart jumps
And though my skin burns at your touch, I still have goosebumps
The sweet torture of your love is incomparable
Living without you, almost impossible
Each minute without you is so unbearable
Gotta let the world know, because my love for you…is undeniable
So don’t leave me alone in this fiery furnace of emotions
Give me your time, your care and devotion
I want to wake up every morning to your loving gaze
Now and forever, let’s set our hearts ablaze.

group of girls

I know we often hear this : “UNILAG girls have shakara” but to be honest, this is not always the case. If you like a girl, the reputation of her school/schoolmates shouldn’t deter you from going after her. This post is not limited to Unilag guys, girls or even students alone. As a universal rule most information in this post is useful to a wide range of people. Before I go into the main point I’ll like to debunk some falsities about Unilag girls that the general public believes:

1. Not all Unilag girls are aristos.

2. We won’t have sex with you if you buy us sharwarma or Chicken and Chips.

Now for all you young men looking to start/keep a long-term relationship with a Unilag girl or any other girl for that matter, pay attention to the following points below.

Meeting a girl for the first time, or going out for the first time is very crucial in a relationship. In fact it forms the basis of the  relationship, it determines whether or not the relationship is worth keeping. Don’t discuss every aspect of your life with her date on the first day, to be honest she might not be able to remember it all after that day, rather stick to the basics, be vague and mysterious and let her be intrigued by you. It’s basic psychology, if you tell her less she wants to know more.

So you had a great date and you’re feeling so in  love already, you’re feeling like kissing her, holding her and never letting go.Calm down mister, it’s too soon you only just met her. Kissing her will only scare her off except if she initiates the kiss herself (which is less likely), in which you can only give her a simple kiss (no tongue) or a peck and a hug. The reason for this is the relationship is still fresh and if you want it to last long it shouldn’t be based on feelings, attraction and passion alone, it should also include friendship, and companionship.

cute guy

Don’t borrow your friend’s car or BB phone to pose, do you think she wouldn’t find out? Think again. Don’t dress like a pimp or yahoo boy and expect her to take you seriously, to be honest girls love bad boys or boys that dress like this but never really intend having a real relationship because they consider such guys ‘players’. Dress smartly and confidently, you can go casual or corporate(just lose the suit and tie, it gives the impression of  you being too serious or uptight).

laff 2

Girls love guys that make them laugh, I don’t mean for you to become a comedian like Jedi or Basket-mouth, just be able to make her laugh and have fun whenever she’s with you. Tease her lightly(but be nice about it), don’t make her the butt of all your jokes.

group of girls

A girl’s friends influence how much she likes a guy to a great extent(most times). Even if you don’t like her friends, find a way to make them like you or try your possible best to connect with them. Don’t show too much interest in any of her friends either, she’ll think you want to hit on one of them.Be a worthy boyfriend, by this I mean, be presentable. Girls love showing off to other girls, their new clothes, car, BOYFRIEND. Be the kind of guy her friends will drool over, it increases her attraction to you and also makes her feel lucky/happy to be the one who has you hooked and not them.

Arguments happen all the time, you don’t have to be right always, learn to be wrong even when you think you’re right.Try to see her point and accept your mistakes when you’re wrong. Make her your confidant, don’t flare up when she keeps things from you.Now come to think about it, are you sure you told her absolutely EVERYTHING about you?So instead of getting angry and ruining things, tell her something about yourself that she doesn’t know or you’ve never told her, she’ll feel happy that you could confide in her and who knows, she just might open up to you in turn. This bonds your relationship and brings you closer than ever.

If you love someone, let them know. Don’t hide your feelings or manipulate theirs. Learn to laugh, play and have quality fun with each other. I hope I’ve been able to answer any questions and clear any doubts you’ve been having about UNILAG girls and other girls in general, your comments and views will be very much appreciated, thank you.
