We live in a society where every one wants to be heard and everybody wants to be famous for one thing or the other.Where every one is either a famous musician, a popular actress or a super blogger. It gets frustrating when everyone else is under the spotlight and you’re there in the background feeling invincible. This post is about finding your voice and getting yourself heard in this society.

To get yourself heard, you have to learn how to speak your mind. I don’t mean for you to speak out every odd little thought that pops into your head, no. I’m talking about voicing your opinions and not letting anyone stamp down your ideas.Don’t be a pushover!A lot of people are used to following the band wagon, when everyone else’s opinions differ from ours we tend to just “go with the flow”. There’s this popular Yoruba adage, when translated it means:

When the world turns around, let’s also turn with them

This has become normal in society but we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be convinced that our opinions don’t count because they do.If anyone told me I shouldn’t watch cartoons cause it’s childish or immature….ooh, it’s going to be world war II all over again. Just try separating me from my Cartoon Network and you just signed your death-wish.

But all jokes apart, we should all be equally able to speak our minds even if it makes us different. You don’t have to sleep with your boss for a promotion just cause other girls are doing it, or let your girlfriend/boyfriend/partner impose their principles, ideas and opinions on you cause you’re scared they’ll leave you.Speak up!

In order to stand up for something, you have to stand out for that thing. Being different entails thinking like an achiever. In our present society everyone looks, dresses, and acts the same. We’ve all turned into social zombies, products of what society makes us out to be. Being different not only guarantees you being heard but also being remembered. A bright light will shine in darkness but no one will notice it in the daytime, stand out!

When I die, I want to be remembered for something, not just anything but something great. I don’t want to be this person that is forgotten a year after. From my youth, I’ve started carving a niche for myself, what’s stopping you? To be known for something, you don’t have to invent something new or try hard to achieve what has never been achieved before (although, that’s not bad either)instead think of ways to improve what we already have in existence. Percy Spencer invented microwave popcorn even though popcorn had been discovered thousands of years ago. He took something old, twisted it into something entirely different and made a name out of it.

Winners don’t do different things; they do things differently

Have you ever seen babies when they are hungry? They scream out loud and they don’t stop till their mothers pay attention to them and give them what they want. When you want something you have to be persistent and relentless because when you keep clamoring for something, you’ll get it eventually. Most successful people were not born great, some of them were write-offs, but they worked up to it.The few that were born to succeed worked hard to keep it because they recognize that continuity and persistence makes success. So what if you were born a great drummer, if you ignore your talent it will amount to nothing.

A lot of people have stood up for one thing or another at one point. But my all-time favorite hero who stood up for something is Daniel ( in the Bible). When no one in all of Babylon could read or interpret the strange writing on the wall to King Belshazzar, Daniel was brought to the King and he was promised all manner of riches and even the third ruling position in all the land if he could read and interpret it.But Daniel said boldly to the King:

Let your gifts be to yourself and give your rewards to another; yet I will
read the writing to the King and make known to him the interpretation

Daniel 5:17

I wonder how many people now can be blessed with such a gift without misusing it.Stand up for something but not just anything, rather than fight for a cause you know nothing about, pursue your passions and beliefs.

If it is to be, it is up to me.
